Benjamin Martin

Biography

Benjamin Martin has more than 90 senior national caps since making his debut in 2009. That year he helped Canada win gold at the Pan American Cup, qualifying the team for the 2010 FIH World Cup. In 2011 a hip flexor injury kept him out of action for six months, but after successful rehab, he , returned to the national team and helped Canada win silver at the 2013 Pan American Cup.. In 2014 he competed at the Commonwealth Games as well as at the Champions Challenge 1 in Malaysia where Canada finished second. Martin played with the UBC Thunderbirds for six years before joining the Vancouver Hawks of the Vancouver League, serving as captain in 2013. In 2015 Martin was an integral part of the Canadian team that qualified for Rio 2016 with a shootout victory over New Zealand in the quarterfinals of the FIH World League Semifinals. He was also part of the team that took home a silver medal at the  Pan Am Games in Toronto. Martin made his Olympic debut at Rio 2016.

Family: Parents Stanley and Ruth…Two older siblings, Rebecca and Daniel, and  younger brother Thomas… Wife Kathryn… Getting into the Sport: Started playing field hockey at age 8 because his older brother was… In 2003 he saw Canada play live for the first time at a three-nation tournament and knew that one day he wanted to wear the maple leaf… Outside Interests: Earned Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2010… Pursuing PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UBC…Has published several scientific articles on gene activation… Enjoys reading, hiking, kayaking, exploring the outdoors… Odds and Ends: Nickname: Bambi…
