Biography

Colin Russell competed in his second consecutive Olympic Games in London in 2012 and was part of two relay teams. He joined the the 4x200m freestyle relay team that finished 14th, with Blake Worsley, Tobias Oriwol and Alec Page. In the 4x100m freestyle relay, Russell teamed up with Brent Hayden, Richard Hortness and Thomas Gossland to finish in 10th place.

At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, Russell contributed to the qualification of both teams for Olympic spots.

During the 2010 season, he won the national title in the 200m freestyle and placed 11th at the Pan Pacific championships in that event.

At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Russell represented Canada in the 200m freestyle and both the 4×100 and 4×200 freestyle relays. Following Worlds, Russell was part of Canada’s 4x200m free relay team which swam to a World Record time of 6:51.05 at the Short Course Swimming Grand Prix, Leeds, UK.

At the Beijing Games, Russell joined the fifth-place 4x200m freestyle relay team and the sixth-place 4x100m team. He also swam to a 14th place finish in the 200m freestyle.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Russell captured a bronze with his team in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Russell also won a silver medal as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, BC.

In 2005, Russell proved himself a valuable member on the men’s 4×200 freestyle relay to break the Canadian record and win a silver medal at the FINA World Championships in Montreal.

His younger sister Sinead also competed in swimming for Canada at the 2012 London Games.
