Canadian Olympic school program launches nationwide

BROMONT – With the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games fast approaching, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) will use stories from Canadian Olympians and Olympic hopefuls to inspire students and teach them about friendship, excellence and respect through the 2014 edition of the Canadian Olympic School Program (COSP).

The COSP 2014 edition was launched at L’École de la Chantignole in Bromont, QC where Olympians Philippe Beaudry (Fencing), Élise Marcotte (Synchronized Swimming), Sandra Sassine (Fencing) and Joannie Rochette (Figure Skating) led students through part of the Canadian Olympic School Program curriculum.

“Canadian Olympians and Olympic hopefuls are Canada’s best ambassadors for the values of friendship, excellence and respect,” said Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee. “The Canadian Olympic School Program uses these values to challenge, educate and inspire Canadian students, teachers and educators in order to help build safer and healthier communities across Canada.”

“The messages promoted by the Canadian Olympic School Program are important, no matter your age or where you live,” said figure skater Joannie Rochette, Vancouver 2010 Olympic bronze medallist. “They’re universal. I’m proud to be a part of sharing these values.”

The COSP program, developed for teachers by teachers, is designed to promote Olympic values and the importance of pursuing personal excellence in all facets of life.

“Seeing the reaction on the faces of our students this afternoon was absolutely wonderful,” said Guy Vincent, Chair, Val-des-Cerfs School Board. “To have our school chosen to experience the Canadian Olympic School Program with such a distinguished group of Olympians is a true honour. I know our students will remember this moment for a long time. At the Val-des-Cerfs school board, we welcome opportunities to work together with partners such as the COC to ensure our students’ success.”

The Canadian Olympic School Program has engaged students in the Olympic Movement since 1987, inspiring students to achieve their personal best through Olympian stories, activities, movement skills, podcasts, case studies and project packs.
