Three Olympians named to Pan Am team for modern pentathlon

Five athletes have been nominated to Team Canada for modern pentathlon at Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, a contest that doubles as an Olympic qualifier for Rio 2016.

The competition, which consists of five events, is set to take place in and around the Pan Am Aquatics Centre in Scarborough July 18-19. The five events – fencing, swimming, equestrian, running and shooting – take place in one day.

The women will compete on the first day and that team features Olympians Melanie McCann and Donna Vakalis, along with teenager Hillary Elliott. The men will take the stage the following day with another Olympian, Joshua Riker-Fox, joined by teammate Garnett Stevens.

McCann was the top Canadian at the last Pan Am Games in Guadalajara. Her fourth place finish four years ago earned her a spot at London 2012, where she finished 11th, the best result to date for a Canadian in modern pentathlon at the Olympic Games.
