Hometown heroes skate to silver
Olympic champions Scott Moir (Ilderton, ON) and Tessa Virtue (London, ON) have added another medal in their historic career after capturing silver at the 2013 Figure Skating World Championships in London, ON.
The duo finished second in both the short dance and the free dance for a combined score of 185.04 to claim their fourth World Championship medal and their second silver medal to go along with their two gold medals.
“How special was it for us to go out there and hear the audience?” asked Moir rhetorically. “It was neat for both Tessa and I to see our communities pull together…I think the community did an amazing job coming together and really supporting the world.”
It was a good day for Canada’s Sochi qualification hopefuls after Andrew Poje (Waterloo, ON) and Kaitlyn Weaver (Waterloo, ON) finished in fifth place with 166.20 points. The combined tally of the two teams ensures Canada the maximum three quota spots at next year’s Winter Games.
Piper Gilles (Unionville, ON) and Paul Poirier (Toronto, ON) finished in 18th place with 140.02 points.
