Unveiling the jersey: ladies dominate in Turin
On October 8, Hockey Canada will unveil the jerseys to be worn in Sochi by Canadian women’s and men’s national hockey teams at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Leading up to the day, Olympic.ca will revisit the five gold medals won by Canada at the Winter Games and the jerseys worn en route to each gold medal performance.

The Game
Canada’s path to repeat gold at the Winter Games in women’s hockey became a little easier in Turin 2006 with the Americans losing to Sweden in the semifinals. It was the first Olympics loss suffered by the U.S. women to any team other than Canada.
The Canadians played the second semifinal knowing the U.S. wouldn’t be an obstacle in its quest to reach to top step of the podium. Far from taking it easy following the U.S. ouster, Canadian women punished an overmatched Finland 6-0 in its semifinal before defeating the Swedes 4-1 three days later to take the gold medal in Turin.
With the men ousted in the quarterfinals, the women salvaged Canadian hockey pride with outstanding performances by Hayley Wickenheiser (5 games played, 17 points), Cherie Piper (5GP, 15pts) and Gillian Apps (5GP, 14pts). Caroline Ouellette rounded out the top four in tournament scoring, providing an overwhelming nod to Canadian dominance in women’s hockey.
The Jersey
The 2006 red and white jerseys had a similar look and feel to its Salt Lake City predecessor. There were slight changes in some of the details, with vertical stripes replacing the horizontal ones on the sleeves and along the side of the sweater as opposed to the bottom. The heritage patch (discussed in the previous post) remained on the shoulders.
