Andrew Wiggins selected first overall in NBA Draft
Vaughan, Ontario’s Andrew Wiggins was selected first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night.
Wiggins is the second Canadian in two years to be selected first overall in the annual National Basketball League draft, following Anthony Bennett in 2013, who also went to Cleveland.
Wiggins was welcomed via Twitter by yet another Canadian on the Cavaliers roster, Tristan Thompson.
The next morning Wiggins was already in Cleveland to help open a children’s clinic.
Another Canadian went in the top 10 on Thursday when Mississauga, Ontario’s Nik Stauskas was grabbed at eighth overall by the Sacramento Kings.
Wiggins, a forward with limitless athletic ability, played his college basketball at Kansas.
Stauskas came out of Michigan, the guard possesses an irrepressible ability to shoot the ball.
Canadian basketball history was made a little later in the night when point guard Tyler Ennis was selected by Phoenix Suns at 18th overall. That marked the first time three Canadian players had their names called in the first round.
Ennis is known for his sharp distribution of the ball from playing at Syracuse.

The evening ended up being the most successful in Canadian basketball history after Dwight Powell was selected in the second round (45th overall) by Charlotte Hornets. Powell’s versatility has been mentioned as an asset, the player was a revelation during Stanford’s run in the March Madness tournament which included a second round upset over Wiggins’ Kansas Jayhawks.
It was being reported on Friday morning that Powell may soon join the Canadian trio of Thompson, Bennett and Wiggins in Cleveland via trade.
