Biography

Forward Derek Roy tied as Canada’s leading scorer at PyeongChang 2018, putting up two goals and five assists en route to the bronze medal. In the leadup to PyeongChang 2018, Roy played for Team Canada at the Channel One Cup and Tournament of Nikolai Puchkov in 2017. He previously wore the maple leaf at the 2008 and 2009 IIHF World Championships, winning silver medals. He also won silver as a member of Canada’s world junior team in 2003. Roy had been invited to Team Canada’s orientation camp in the summer of 2009, but was not named to the Olympic team for Vancouver 2010.

After being selected in the second round, 32nd overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Roy joined the team in the 2003-04 season and stayed there through 2011-12. Over the next three seasons, he spent time with the Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers as he accumulated a total of 738 NHL games. In 2015-16, Roy moved to Europe, spending the season with Bern SC of the Swiss League. He joined the KHL in 2016-17, first playing with Omsk Avangard and then Chelyabinsk Traktor. In 2017-18 he suited up for Linkopings HC of the Swedish Hockey League. Roy won the 2003 Memorial Cup in his final season with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.
