Biography

Elli Terwiel made her official Olympic debut at Sochi 2014 in the slalom, which she went into with the valuable experience of having been a forerunner at Vancouver 2010 for the slalom and giant slalom. It was her first time at a major global competition.

A slalom specialist, Terwiel had a breakout season in 2012-13 when she record three top-3o World Cup results. At one of those in Maribor, Slovenia, she was actually second-fastest in the second slalom run, en route to a 17th place finish. In November 2013 Terwiel improved her career-best result to 11th place in Levi, Finland.

Terwiel has been competing on the World Cup circuit since January 2011, recording her first finish in December 2011. She debuted at the FIS World Ski Championships in 2013 with a 28th place finish in the slalom.

PERSONAL

Getting Into Sport: Started skiing at 18 months… Moved into the Nancy Greene Ski League when she was four and had her Olympic dream sparked by the chance to wear Greene’s medals… School: Civil engineering student at the University of Vermont with two years completed but on hiatus in 2013-14… The school ski team won the NCAA title in 2012… Plans to take a Masters in architecture… Has always loved designing houses and renovating them with her father… Outside Interests: Music choices influenced by her father, loves Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin… Always travels with a sketch book and teammates love it when she does their portraits… Enjoys knitting and making jewelry as well as doing Rubik’s Cube and other puzzles… Odds and Ends: Looks up to Didier Cuche… Nickname: Elli Bear… Good luck charm is a bracelet from teammate Britt Phelan… Does yoga in the morning of race day… Collects cool rocks… Favourite motto: You can do anything until you limit yourself…
