Garrett Rank
Biography
Garrett Rank was a member of Golf Canada’s National Amateur Team until August 2014 when he decided to focus on his hockey officiating career. He made his debut as an NHL referee in January 2015. At age 27 he was the youngest referee in the league. He had been officiating in the AHL since 2013 and the OHL before that. Rank attended the University of Waterloo on a golf scholarship where he was named Warriors Athlete of the Year in 2012. While in school he was a two-time OUA individual champion and four-time OUA all-star. Also in 2012, he finished second at the US Mid-Amateur Championship where a win would have earned him entry into the 2013 Masters. In 2014 he finished sixth at the Canadian Amateur Championship and second at the US Players Amateur Championship, but the highlight was his playoff victory at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship which earned him an exemption into the 2015 RBC Canadian Open. In 2011 Rank survived a battle with testicular cancer that saw a mass removed through surgery but didn’t require radiation or chemotherapy.
