Singapore, Day Four: Lauren Earp Wins Bronze in 100-Metre Freestyle

Canada captured another medal in the Singapore Sports School pool Tuesday night, while the basketball team sets its sights on a big game and a Canadian sprinter sets the bar for the 400-metre final.

Swimming: Lauren Earp (Toronto) made it two straight days for Canadian swimming medals, as she won bronze in the 100-metre freestyle. Earp touched the wall just one one-hundreth of a second before a Russian swimmer in fourth place. “It’s awesome!” Earp said. “It’s been such a great experience with all these people cheering for you, both here and back at home.” Elsewhere in the pool, teammates Rachel Nichol, Lindsay Delmay and Tera van Beilen all qualified for their respective finals tomorrow night (see chart for details).

Basketball: The Canadian girls’ three-on-three team rolled to 2-0 to start the Youth Olympic tournament, defeating the Ivory Coast 25-12. The Canadians spread out the scoring, with Dakota Whyte (Ajax, Ont.) scoring eight, Kaylee Kilpatrick (St. John, N.B.) seven and Kaylee Halvorson (Regina) six. Tiye Traore (Sudbury, Ont.) cleaned up the boards, leading the field with eight rebounds. The squad enters a stretch of stiffer competition this week games against Korea Wednesday and Russia Thursday. “We worked hard, we played as a team and we fought,” said Kilpatrick. “We fought for ever rebound, every shot and every loose ball.”

Athletics: Katie Reid (Surrey, B.C.) won her 400-metre heat, advancing to the finals Saturday. “I feel good about my run,” Reid said. “I hoped to run faster, but I’m glad I have a spot in the finals because now anything can happen.” Gabrielle Edwards (Saskatoon) was 12th and Eamon Kichuk (Markham, Ont.) was 19th in their respective 3,000-metre heats, while in the long jump qualifications, Rachel Romu (Thunder Bay, Ont.) landed 19th.

Cycling: Kristina LaForge (Alma, Que.) finished the women’s cross-country leg of the combined mixed team event in third spot. Teammate Steven Noble (Glencairn, Ont.) finished 13th in the men’s event. Each team consists of three junior men and one junior woman. The three male cyclists are required to compete in one discipline each (BMX, cross-country and time trial) while the female cyclist must race all three disciplines.
