Derek Drouin holds a Canadian flag over his head

Is Derek Drouin Canada’s darling of summer?

Olympic bronze medallist high jumper Derek Drouin is having an incredible summer.

Since March of this year, the pride of Corunna, ON has set and broken his own national record, collected his fifth NCAA championship title and on Thursday he stood on a IAAF world championship podium with a bronze medal.

His jump of 2.38m, not only set the bar higher for Canada but he solidified his name as a consistent international threat in Athletics.

“I wanted to prove this year that I deserved to be on the podium in London 2012,” said Drouin in a release from Athletics Canada. “It feels good to have accomplished that goal.”

Bohdan Bondarenko of Ukraine earned gold and Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar was the silver medallist.

And Drouin wasn’t the only one setting new national records Thursday.

Matthew Hughes of Oshawa, ON broke a 28-year-old Canadian record after running a 8:11.64 in the 3,000-metre steeplechase for sixth place.

Watch for Kamloops, BC’s Dylan Armstrong in the shot put final Friday.
