Marielle Thompson and Chris Del Bosco collect World Cup ski cross gold

Marielle Thompson continues to establish herself as the country’s best ski cross racer, on one of the world’s most-talented teams.

Today the 21-year-old won the last World Cup ski cross event before the Olympics, in Val Thorens, France.

According to Alpine Canada, it is her second win of the season. She continues to lead the overall standings, ahead of Switzerland’s Katrin Mueller.

It has been a tricky week at Val Thorens, the final opportunity for Canadians to qualify for the Sochi Olympics before the January 19th deadline.

Yesterday, Chris Del Bosco added to his case by finishing first in a competition called after the heats due to strong winds.

“I definitely felt like I could have kept going. It was kind of frustrating because you want to win by winning the final but it was out of my control,” said Del Bosco. “There’s not really any more I could have done.

Alpine Canada said in a release it is unclear if yesterday’s results will count towards Olympic qualification, but it is an official World Cup gold for Del Bosco, who was fourth at Vancouver 2010. However, the organization did name some likely Olympians in Thompson, Kelowna’s Kelsey Serwa, London’s Dave Duncan, and Calgary’s Brady Leman.

Marielle Thompson was fourth on Thursday, while West Vancouver’s Georgia Simmerling was sixth at the time of cancellation.
