Bouchard wins in front of her ‘most positive supporter’

One wouldn’t imagine the character Sheldon Cooper from the popular television show The Big Bang Theory making friends with athletes.

As Dr. Cooper himself admitted when responding to Stan Lee’s sarcastic invitation to watch the Lakers game together, “Well, I’m not much of a sports fan…” before further upsetting the bemused comic book icon by waltzing into his home uninvited.

The actor who plays Sheldon is Jim Parsons. Unlike his legendary TV personality, the three-time Emmy Award winner Parsons can not only be seen in the sports arena, but he is an active member of #GenieArmy, the fan club following Canada’s rising women’s tennis star Eugenie Bouchard.

How committed is Parsons in his support of Bouchard? Before Wimbledon got underway, he posted drinking from a ‘London’ mug, “@wimbledon starts tomorrow! I love a lot of the players, but none more than my friend, @geniebouchard GO GENIE!”

How did their friendship start? A few days later Parsons revealed on ESPN during a lengthy rain delay that he and Bouchard met through their managers after exchanging a few emails (full interview at the bottom of the article). The support continued.

Bouchard reciprocated on Instagram in between matches watching episodes of Big Bang.

Then perhaps the most famous member of #GenieArmy (that we know of) paid a visit to Bouchard at Wimbledon. The Canadian called Parsons her “most positive supporter.”

Most recently on Monday, as Bouchard took the court to realize her third consecutive quarterfinal appearance in a Grand Slam this season by beating Alize Cornet 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the fourth round, Parsons was live on hand to witness her triumph on the eve of Canada Day.

Meanwhile, the strong performance of Canadian tennis continues on the men’s side where Olympian Milos Raonic went through to the fourth round at Wimbledon on Saturday after beating Lukasz Kubot 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

No word if Parsons is on board with #TeamMilos (which will be active in a Canada Day match) but the actor who brings Sheldon to life in a loquacious, uncompromising demeanour on the TV screen could certainly charm his way into any supporters’ group.

And that’s no bazinga!
