Women’s water polo team strikes silver at Toronto 2015

Canadian women couldn’t keep a strong American squad at bay in the gold medal match losing 13-4 on Tuesday night in Markham, Ontario.

Two goals from Monika Eggens and singles by Joelle Bekhazi and Krystina Alogbo were all the offence the Canadians could muster against an American team that quickly pulled away, despite Eggens giving Canada a 1-0 lead.

Down 6-3 after two periods, the match was truly out of Canada’s reach when the U.S. blanked the Canadians 4-0 in the next frame to take a 10-3 lead, and virtually sealing the silver for the home country.

With Brazil beating Cuba 9-6 to win bronze, the first, second and third places at Toronto 2015 in women’s water polo are the exact same as they were four years ago at the Pan Am Games.

On the men’s side of the bracket, a heartbreaking 9-8 semifinal loss to the United States on Monday night will have Canada playing in the bronze medal match on Wednesday against Argentina. Canada had won the Pan Am silver medal four years ago but will want to close out the tournament in front of home fans with a bronze at Toronto 2015.
