Heather Steacy

Biography

Heather Steacy made her Olympic debut at London 2012 where she was joined on the team by older brother Jim. She returned to the Games at Rio 2016. She first represented Canada at the 2005 IAAF World Youth Championships before winning bronze at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships. She captured hammer throw gold at the 2009 Canada Games. Steacy was the Canadian champion in 2010, 2011 and 2012. She won bronze at the 2015 Canadian Championships after placing fourth in 2014 and second in 2013. In 2011 she represented Canada at both the IAAF World Championships and the Summer Universiade. In her Pan Am Games debut at Toronto 2015, Steacy faulted on all three of her attempts, recording no measurement.

Family: Parents Graham and Debby Steacy… Older brothers Sean and Jim Steacy were both hammer throwers and watching them compete internationally motivated her to keep up… Jim is a two-time Olympian … Sister-in-law Ashley is a member of the 2015 Pan Am Games rugby sevens team… Getting into the Sport: Started hammer throw at age 13… After getting dragged along to her brothers’ practices for a while, she caved and started throwing too… Outside Interests: Enjoys reading, listening to music and napping… Had been pursuing a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance at the University of Lethbridge until 2011 when hammer throw took over her life… Odds and Ends: Always travels with a book… Collects paper maps and beer coasters from her travels… Favourite motto: “First deserve, then desire”…
