Athlete of the Week: Katerine Savard
Swimmer Katerine Savard earned two medals of Canada’s 16 medals at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. The human sciences student at CEGEP Ste-Foy first captured silver in the non-Olympic 50m butterfly event, followed by gold in the 100m butterfly. The latter was one of just two gold medals won by Canadian athletes in Kazan and her winning time of 57.63 was a Universiade record. With her second place finish in the 50m butterfly, she lowered her own national record to 26.05.
The medals are just the latest successes for Savard this season. In early June she broke her own national mark in the 100m butterfly, recording a time of 57.40 that is second-fastest in the world in 2013. That came on the heels of her defeating American Dana Vollmer, the reigning Olympic Champion in the 100m butterfly. Next up for Savard are the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona. She will compete in the 100m and 200m butterfly events, with the swimming schedule getting underway on July 28. The final of the 100m fly is scheduled for July 29 while the 200m fly final is on August 1. Follow: @swimmingcanada
