Lightning forward Martin St-Louis added to replace Stamkos

Hockey Canada has announced Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St-Louis will replace Steven Stamkos on the men’s hockey team.

The change was announced via twitter in the evening Sochi time.

Stamkos broke a bone in his leg in November and despite a seemingly quick recovery, just won’t be ready in time.

Martin St-Louis’ last Olympic hockey competition was Turin 2006 where Canada finished seventh. He is having a strong NHL season, with 25 goals and 26 assists as of the announcement. In December, Team Canada Executive Director Steve Yzerman said the decision to originally leave St-Louis off the team was difficult. Especially given the relationship he has with the veteran.

Canada’s first game at the Bolshoy Ice Dome will be Thursday, February 13th versus Norway.
