David Hearn makes the cut at British Open debut
David Hearn has followed in Graham DeLaet’s footsteps and for the second straight year, a Canadian golfer appearing in their first ever British Open has managed to make the cut.
David Hearn was a late addition to the field at Royal Liverpool, but still put together a great first ever round at the Open. Hearn entered the clubhouse on Thursday with a two-under 70, placing him in the top 20 on the leaderboard.
After shooting only one bogey in his first round, Hearn struggled to keep the the same consistency on Friday. He started well, with a birdie on the fourth hole to move to three-under, but followed that up with four bogeys over the next six holes to fall back to one-over.
After his collapse on holes six to ten, Hearn calmed down and made six pars in a row. He finished the second round on a high note, making birdies on the final two holes to move back up to one-under par for the weekend, well above the two-over cut line.

Although Hearn has made the cut, he is still well back of the top of the leaderboard, 11 strokes behind leader Rory McIlroy. Regardless of where Hearn finishes this weekend, he should receive a nice bump in the rankings (he currently sits at 100th) as well as the 2014 Money List (he is 82nd with just over $1 million in winnings).
Last year, it was fellow Canadian Graham DeLaet who made the cut at his first British Open appearance. DeLaet didn’t fare as well this year in his second showing at the Open, finishing Friday at three-over par and missing the cut by just one stroke.
