2014 Commonwealth Games - Savard and Bezzoubenko

Commonwealth Games: Savard & Bezzoubenko golden

Canadian athletes delivered two first place performances on the second day of Commonwealth Games, helping to bring the country’s medal total to nine.

Canada continued to make waves in the pool with London 2012 Olympian Katerine Savard taking the gold medal in the women’s 100m butterfly. Savard’s time of 57.40 was a Commonwealth Games record and put her atop the podium ahead of Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of England (57.45) and Australian Emma McKeon (57.66).

It was the third swimming medal for Canada at the Games. On Thursday Ryan Cochrane won gold in 400m freestyle and the team of Alyson Ackman, Michelle Williams, Sandrine Mainvill and Victoria Poon earn bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

On dry land, Patricia Bezzoubenko won a gold medal in the individual all-around portion of women’s rhythmic gymnastics on Friday. That gives Bezzoubenko two golds in as many days. On Thursday, she was part of victorious women’s team, along with Annabelle Kovacs and Maria Kitkarska.

Three other medals were won on Friday (all bronze): Olympic shooter Dorothy Ludwig (10m air pistol) and judo athletes Alix Renaud-Roy (women’s 70kg) and Jonah Burt (men’s 81kg).
