“The ultimate goal is Rio” – rowers set sights on 2016

Team Canada women reached the podium twice over the weekend at the World Rowing Championships and the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games are very much on the mind.

Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee were second in the lightweight double behind New Zealand after a strong start on Saturday.

“We sprinted for the line, but it was more controlled,” Obee said in a Rowing Canada release. “The water was so bumpy, we didn’t want to make any mistakes, knowing we were in a medal position.”

“I am already excited to start training again,” her teammate Jennerich added. “The ultimate goal is Rio.”

Canada doubled its haul with the women’s eight a day later with Cristy Nurse, Lisa Roman, Natalie Mastracci, Rosie DeBoef, Susanne Grainger, Christine Roper, Ashley Brzozowicz, Lauren Wilkinson and coxswain Lesley Thompson-Willie edged out by the United States in the final.

The team has already sounded out that it will not rest on the second step of the podium.

“We all believed right to the line that there was a possibility that we could do it,” said Mastracci. “We are going to go back to the drawing board and keep training, that’s what we do. We don’t give up.”
