Cochrane gets Canada on the board at swimming worlds
Canadian swimmers are in Kazan, Russia for the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, where Ryan Cochrane has put the country on the swimming medals table with a bronze in the 400-metre freestyle.
Cochrane’s time of 3:44.59 was bettered only by Sun Yang of China (3:42.58) and Great Britain’s James Guy (3:43.75). Cochrane was in lane three, with Sun and Guy on either side of him. The Canadian had to touch the wall before American Connor Jaeger in lane six, who finished just 0.22 seconds off the podium.
The medal in the men’s 400m is an excellent start for Team Canada in Kazan, with Cochrane’s stronger events, the 800m and 1500m free, still to come. Cochrane won two Pan Am Games gold medals (400m and 1500m) before heading to Russia.
At the FINA World Championships – where multiple aquatics sports are being contested – Canada is up to five medals with Cochrane’s bronze, following four from diving with that event concluding on Sunday.
