CBC secures Olympic broadcast through 2024
After winning the rights to show the Olympics through 2020 last year, on Wednesday it was revealed that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation remains the Games’ main channel in Canada into 2024.
The International Olympic Committee awarded CBC the right to broadcast Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 last fall. It was also learned that some of those rights would be shared with Bell and Rogers media companies, an extension of an existing relationship that started during Sochi 2014. CBC – the public broadcaster – confirmed its arrangement with the private media giants to bring the Games to more homes, computers and mobile devices is to continue through 2024.

IOC released a statement from president Thomas Bach, who called CBC “a strong supporter of sport in Canada” for its “broadcast of the Olympic Games as well as year-round coverage of Olympic sports.” Additionally, Bach alluded to the prospects of a global Olympic Channel, one of the recommendations from his Agenda 2020 commitment to reform and streamline the official apparatus of the Olympic movement.
CBC resumed broadcast of the Olympic Games in Russia at Sochi 2014 after Bell-owned CTV (along with its primary sport properties TSN, and RDS for French language viewing), showed Vancouver 2010 and London 2012. CBC will be the broadcaster of the upcoming Rio 2016 Games that begin next August.
Chinese capital Beijing was awarded the Winter Games of 2022 earlier this year beating out Almaty, Kazakhstan while a summer host for 2024 will be decided in the second half of 2017.
