Petro-Canada awards athletes through FACE program grants

On Saturday, Petro-Canada announced the names of 52 athlete-coach pairs who will be awarded with $10,000 in funding for the following year.

The Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE) program grants are often used for training, equipment, coach education and travel expenses for competitions, supporting up-and-coming athletes who are striving to represent Canada at the Olympic or Paralympic Games, but don’t yet qualify for government funding.

Since 1988, over 2700 Canadian athletes and their coaches have been helped, totalling more than $10 million in support.

In addition, FACE athletes and coaches are invited to an annual summit, when they will learn from Olympians, Paralympians and subject matter experts in the areas of media training, public speaking, and personal-brand development.

Past funding recipients of FACE include Olympic legends Mark Tewksbury and Hayley Wickenheiser. Younger Olympic champions such as Marielle Thompson and Kaitlyn Lawes have also benefited from the Petro-Canada initiative in early stages of their respective careers.

The FACE athletes from across Canada represent 39 different summer and winter sports in both individual and team events. To get to know the complete list of the funding recipients of FACE program, click here.
