Fernandez advances to the second round of the French Open

In an exciting opening match, Leylah Fernandez defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-1 in only 59 minutes on Sunday at the kick-off of Roland-Garros.

The 18-year-old from Montreal found consistency within her swing and controlled the court for an impressive sweep. Fernandez only saw six unforced errors, won 74 percent of her service points, and struck 17 winners. Russia’s Potapova experienced 20 unforced errors to only 16 winners.

The 2019 Junior Frech Open Champion awaits the winner between Oceane Dodin and 23rd seed Madison Keys in the second round.

On Monday, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu will take on Tamara Zidansek.
