Carl English

Biography

Carl EnglishCarl English rose to national prominence at the 1997 Canada Games in Brandon where he was a 16-year-old starter on a team of players two years older. After moving to an Ontario high school to pursue his sport, he earned a spot on an under-18 team that travelled to the United States where he was recruited by several top NCAA programs. In 1999 he enrolled at the University of Hawaii where he emerged as a star. In his final year in 2003 he led the team with 19.6 points per game and was named to the Western Athletic Conference first team. Foregoing his senior year of college eligibility, he declared for the NBA Draft but after going unselected he eventually landed in Europe, playing in Italy, Croatia, Spain, and most recently, Greece. English has been part of the national team program since 2000, playing in three FIBA Americas Championships.

PERSONAL

Family: Grew up in Patrick’s Cove (population 50) with his aunt and uncle Betty and Junior McGrath after his parents Kevin and Lavinia were killed in a house fire when he was five… He and his four brothers escaped the house through an upstairs window, but were then separated from each other… Getting into the Sport: Started playing basketball at age 11… Practiced with a homemade net that stood on the side of a rural two-lane highway that had hand-painted foul and three-point lines… By grade eight he was a starter on the high school senior boys team… Outside Interests: Attended the University of Hawaii…
