Cheryl Bernard

Biography

Cheryl Bernard’s career highlight came at Vancouver 2010 where she skipped her team of Susan O’Connor, Carolyn Darbyshire, Cori Bartel and Kristie Moore to the Olympic silver medal. They had finished the round robin atop the standings with an 8-1 record but lost to defending Olympic champion Anette Norberg of Sweden in the final. Bernard’s rink had become Team Canada by defeating 2006 Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Kleibrink with her last rock in the Roar of the Rings final in December 2009.

Bernard is a four-time Alberta provincial champion, making her first two appearances at the Tournament of Hearts in 1992 and 1996. After finishing second at the latter, she spent the next decade focused on building her insurance business while continuing to compete. Having brought on Darbyshire and Bartel to play with her and O’Connor in 2005-06, she finally returned to the national championship in 2007. They made another appearance at the Tournament of Hearts in 2009 before disbanding after the 2010-11 season.

Bernard announced her retirement in June 2014 after losing the Alberta provincial final earlier that year and soon became a curling analyst for TSN. At PyeongChang 2018, she was the fifth for Team Homan but did not see any game action.

Getting into the Sport: Started curling at age 8… Outside Interests: Works as a curling analyst for TSN… At age 23, started her own general insurance brokerage in Calgary which was sold more than a decade later so she could re-focus on curling and other interests (writing, fundraising)… Inspired by her father’s fight against cancer, she created “Curl for a Cure” in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation… Co-authored the book “Between the Sheets: Creating Curling Champions” in 2005 which describes the mental side of curling… Spokesperson and ambassador for Goodwill Industries of Alberta… Enjoys playing golf…
