Joe Bartoch qualified for the 2012 London Olympics after winning the 100m butterfly at the 2012 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in Montreal with a time of 53:01. A butterfly specialist, he owns the Canadian record of 52.28 that he established in 2008.

Bartoch was part of the Beijing Games medley relay team that finished 10th .and also competed in the 100m butterfly there.

In 2009, he swam with the World Championships team in Rome, in both the 50m and 100m butterfly as well as the 4×100 medley relay team, finishing 9th.

In 2007, Bartoch competed at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro where he swam the 100m fly in 53.18 and the 50m free in a personal best time of 23.24. A month later at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand, Bartoch swam a personal best in the 50m fly (24.33) to finish 10th and swam the 100m fly in 53.21 to finish seventh.

He began swimming as a four-year-old at the London Aquatic Club. A late bloomer, Bartoch began to show results in his teens that earned him a scholarship to the University of Las Vegas where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 2007.
