Biography

When freestyle skiing was a demonstration sport at Calgary 1988, Canada’s Lloyd Langlois finished third but more importantly he had played an integral role in convincing the International Olympic Committee to add it to the official Olympic programme. When freestyle skiing eventually received full medal status in its debut at Lillehammer 1994, Langlois was already a two-time world champion. He captured the bronze medal, sharing the podium with teammate Philippe LaRoche’s silver, marking the first time since 1932 that Canada had won two medals in the same Olympic event.

A member of the Canadian team known as the “Québec Air Force”, Langlois’ 13-year career spanned from 1984 until his retirement in 1997. His Olympic bronze in 1994 adds to his 55 World Cup podium finishes (21 gold, 26 silver, nine bronze). Langlois was the first-ever World Aerials champion in 1986 and won his second title in 1989 (4th in 1991). He twice led the World Cup rankings (1985, 1987) and was second three times (1986, 1993, 1994). A four-time national champion (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997), Langlois was also second twice (1987, 1996) and third twice (1985, 1992).

In 2018, Langlois’ trophies and medals were put on display in the tourist information centre of his hometown of Magog. A co-owner of a restaurant there with his wife, Langlois worked as a general manager of Cirque des Étoiles Memphrémagog, a local circus group.

Langlois was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1987, Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 2002 and Sherbrooke Hall of Fame in 2016.
