Mariah Millen

Biography

Mariah Millen was born and raised on Toronto Island, giving her an early introduction to sailing. She spent several years competing in the Optimist class before progressing to junior racing in the 420 and 29er classes. She joined forces with skipper Ali ten Hove in the 49er FX in the summer of 2016 and they finished second at that year’s North American Championships. In 2017, they posted a fifth-place finish at the 49er FX Junior World Championships and won the Canadian title.

They made their first appearance at the ISAF World Sailing Championships in 2018, qualifying for the gold fleet and a spot on the national team. Millen was Sail Canada’s 2018 winner of the Marvin McDill Memorial Award for best performance by a rookie on the Canadian Sailing Team.

An early highlight in 2019 was a 15th-place finish at the European Championships, a Canadian best ever result. They would go on to record a fourth-place finish at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, earning an Olympic spot in the event for Canada for Tokyo 2020. In February 2020, they earned a career-best world championship result, finishing 18th at the 49er FX class worlds in Australia.
