Biography
Defender Robyn Gayle is a two-time Olympian who helped Canada capture a historic bronze medal at London 2012.
Gayle appeared in just one game in her Olympic debut at Beijing 2008 where the Canadian women’s soccer team competed at the Olympic Games for the first time ever, advancing to the quarterfinals. Four years later, she was on the field in two games as the squad won Canada’s first Olympic medal in a traditional team summer sport since Berlin 1936.
Gayle represented Canada in three editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, highlighted by a sixth-place finish on home soil in 2015. In 2002, she had won silver at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup which was also hosted in Canada.
Gayle was also named to three Pan American Games teams. After winning silver in 2003, she was selected for the 2007 team but did not play. At Guadalajara 2011, she scored in the 88th minute of the semifinal against Colombia to put Canada through to the final where they won the gold medal. Gayle made a total of 81 international appearances with the national team before her retirement in 2015.
