- Born in Britain, he came to Canada in 1987 on a Canadian Rhodes Foundation Scholarship
- Graduated in 1986 from Oxford University (Philosophy, Politics, Economics); obtained a master’s degree in 1988/1989 from Queen’s University; in 1997, obtained his Ph.D in Sports Administration and Management from the University of Alberta
- His wife, Tara Croxford was a member of the Canadian Field Hockey team and competed at the 1992 Olympic Games, finishing 7th
