Biography
Adriana Leon made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where she won gold with Canada. She scored the Canadian goal in a 1-1 draw against Great Britain in the preliminary round. She also scored in the penalty shootout against Brazil in the quarterfinal.
Leon scored the game-winning goal against China in her senior international debut at the 2013 Four Nations Tournament, helping Canada to a silver medal. She was named to the Canadian team for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, appearing in four games at the tournament on home soil.
Her next appearance with the national team came in a series of friendlies in 2017 before her tournament return at the 2018 Algarve Cup. She then finished second for the Golden Boot with six goals at the 2018 CONCACAF Championship, helping Canada take home a silver medal and qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She came on as a substitute in three games in France.
In 2020, Leon scored four goals in Canada’s 11-0 thrashing of St. Kitts and Nevis at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament. Canada would eventually take the silver medal at the event, securing their spot at Tokyo 2020. In 2021, Leon was injured at the SheBelieves Cup but played through, helping Canada finish third. The injury turned out to be a broken fifth metatarsal in her left foot which required surgery.
As a junior, Leon was the top scorer at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, leading Team Ontario to a bronze medal. She represented Canada at the 2010 U20 CONCACAF Championships, leading the team in scoring. She also played at the 2012 U20 FIFA World Cup, scoring a hat trick in Canada’s 6-0 group stage win over Argentina.
Leon played collegiately for the University of Florida and Notre Dame. At the 2010 NCAA Championship, in her freshman year with the Fighting Irish, she came off the bench to score the lone goal in their 1-0 title win. Following a year with the Gators, Leon joined the NWSL in 2013. She played there for four seasons, making a brief stop in Switzerland with FC Zurich and reaching the Champions League round of 16 before returning for another three years. She joined English club West Ham United in 2019, scoring five goals in the 2020 season.
