Philip Bester

Biography

Philip Bester turned pro in 2006 and has a career-high ATP World Tour singles ranking of 229, achieved in July 2011. He has seven career singles titles in ITF Futures tournaments. Bester had an outstanding junior career, winning the Canadian U14, U16 and U18 titles. He was also a finalist at the 2006 Junior French Open, making him the first Canadian man to ever make the final of a Grand Slam tournament. He had a career high junior ranking of eighth in the world. Bester has yet to qualify for the main draw at one of the Grand Slam tournaments, but has been in the main draw of the ATP Masters 1000 Canada three times, most recently in 2007. Bester last competed for Canada in Davis Cup in the 2011 Americas Group 1 victory over Ecuador in which he won the fifth rubber to put Canada into the World Group Playoff. He then suffered an injury which took him out of tennis for a year. He returned in 2012 only to suffer a hip injury that required surgery in November 2013. He returned to competition seven months later and spent 2014 trying to rebuild his ranking.

Getting into the Sport: Was coached by his father from age 5… Moved to Florida in Grade 9 to train at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy…
